The Dora Maar House

I'm always amazed at what stumbling across one photo can lead to each day.  Last week, I saw the above photo on Pinterest with the simple caption, Dora Maar House. A little Googling led to not only more images but to the fact that the house is now home to the Brown Foundation Fellows Program open to outstanding mid-career professionals in the arts and humanities.

"Located in the village of Ménerbes, in one of the most beautiful regions of Southern France, this 18th-century town house was purchased in 1944 by Pablo Picasso for Dora Maar, the artist and Surrealist photographer who was his companion and muse in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Maar (1907–1997) owned the house until her death, after which a resident of both Houston and Ménerbes bought and renovated the house to transform it into a retreat for writers, scholars, and artists.
In 2006, the MFAH was asked to direct this project, now called the Brown Foundation Fellows Program at the Dora Maar House. Amenities include four private bedrooms, each with a private bath; three studies for writers and scholars; a studio for artists; and a piano. Residents share the kitchen, library, living, and dining rooms, and two garden areas. The house is equipped with high-speed wireless Internet access, laptops, a printer, and a fax machine."
I've missed the deadline for this year but I might definitely apply next year.  I mean, how amazing does this look and sound?!

Picasso Black and White

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I braved the crowded to check out the new Picasso Black and White exhibition at the Guggenheim museum. While it's not as dynamic or inspiring as some of the colorful Picasso exhibitions at the Gagosian galleries recently, Picasso's work is amazing in any color. The white spiral gallery at the Guggenheim makes a wonderful complement to the art as well.  Hope you check it out the next time you're in New York.  Picasso Black and White runs through January 23, 2012.
